Lora Yeager-Smith, Podiatrist
Podiatrist Dr. Lora Yeager-Smith discusses the symptoms, causes and treatments for Ingrown Toenail.
Nail problems
Abnormal nail growth can be caused by several entities, such as acute or chronic illness, injury, psoriasis or fungus. Illness: a severe illness can cause an interruption of nail growth. In this case, one might see a line from left to right in the toenail, where the border between the old nail and the new nail growth is demarcated. Injury: trauma to a nail can come in many forms, ranging from a direct crush injury from a heavy object to constant microtrauma from ill-fitting shoes. Nail injury can invite fungus. Nail fungus: discoloration, thickening and/or loosening of a toenail can be brought about by the presence of fungus, yeast or mold. There are several species of these living organisms, which are grouped into the Fungus Kingdom (the other Kingdoms being plants, animals and bacteria), and which are able to make a comfortable home in a toenail.
